Community Awards to be presented at Vespers Service
by G. Kerry Webster
The Heritage Days 2011 celebration in downtown Philispburg will kick off with the popular Vespers Services and Community Awards celebration on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Presqueisle Street.

Vesper Services, which are sponsored by Geisinger, allows the community to give thanks for the ability to host such an event as Heritage Days.

"The Vesper Services open Heritage Days each year," said Jim Pollock, Heritage Days committee chairman. "The community as a whole give thanks for the many blessings the community has received over the years and prays for continued guidance and blessings."

Immediately following the Vesper Services, the Heritage Days committee will present its community awards to several local business and organizations that have, or are, withstanding the tests of time. The community awards are sponsored by Clearfield Hospital.

Among those being honored are Trinity United Methodist Church, 180 years; St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 100 years; Philipsburg VFW, 75 years; Goody's, 40 years; Sarina's, 25 years; and D.J. Studios 25 years. The Philipsburg-Osceola varsity softball team will also receive a community award for taking home the PIAA Class AA gold medal after a 25-1 season.

Jim Pollock, chairman of the Philipsburg Heritage Days committee, will also make special presentations to individuals who have made significant contributions and impacted the quality of life in Philipsburg.

"Philipsburg has a reputation of accepting adversity and turning it into a positive," Pollock said. "We hope that spirit never dies."

The late Bob Mitchell will receive a Chairman's Award posthumously for his dedication to the community. Also, Philipsburg-Osceola Area High School senior Allison Patrick will receive a Chairman's Special Award for her gold medal she earned in track & field.

"The Vesper Services and awards ceremony has become a favorite part of the Heritage Days celebration," said Pollock. "We know a lot of people look forward to the awards, and we as a committee look forward to honoring people in the community. It's not a long ceremony, but there's a lot of emotion that goes with it. Heritage Days wouldn't be the same without it."
